LINUS STUBBS



SO I SEE THAT OGDEN GETS DOWN FOR THEIRS.
WHAT IS THE VIBE LIKE OUT THERE? CUZ THE HELL IF Y'ALL AIN'T MAKING SOME DOPE ASS MUSIC.
It's kinda a small town 30 min north of Salt Lake City. Some of the cats I work with in Ogden are hungry for this music shit. There's less of us here in Ogden as there are in Salt Lake, so we try our best to keep up.
DO YOU PREFER TO SAMPLE OR START FROM THE BOTTOM AND BUILD UP?
I always sample. That's how all my favorite producers have done it. There's something quite special about finding a dope groove & flipping it and chopping it into an entirely different song.
WHEN DID YOU REALIZE YOU HAD TALENT AND WERE GOOD AT MAKING BEATS?
When people started telling me my beats were good & that I could tell they were actually sincere about it. Ha-ha!
I threw a cd release party for my instrumental album "Panoramic" & it was quite amazing to get all the support I received from friends & family.
YOU HAVE TWELVE RELEASES ON BANDCAMP; DO YOU STILL GET NERVOUS WHEN PUTTING OUT A PROJECT?
Nah, I wouldn't say I get nervous.. It's more excitement than anything. When I release something, I'm ready to share it with the world. You gotta be confident in your work if it's something you are proud of.
HOW DO YOU THINK YOU'VE PROGRESSED FROM YOUR VERY FIRST BEAT UNTIL THE MOST RECENT?
Oh shit. My first beat was super wack. Haha! But making beats was definitely something I wanted to do. I've come a long way since when I first started, that's for sure. It's all about constant progression.
IF YOU COULD GIVE THE YOUNGER YOU ONE PIECE OF ADVICE WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Don't be afraid to try new things or make mistakes. Oh, and get more acquainted with mixing and mastering vocals. (I wish I was a lot better at that right now)
HOW WAS IT MAKING SOUL BURN? TO ME IT WAS LIKE A JOURNEY FROM FUNKY WITH "SITUATIONS CRITICAL" TO HEAD NODDIN WITH "WON'T SOON FORGET" AND ENDING GRIMEY WITH "DANGEROUS."
WHAT WAS THAT PROCESS LIKE?
This album took awhile to complete mainly cuz some of the guys weren't always able to make it to the lab to record. And towards the end they had asked me to remix some songs that they had previously recorded. But it was quite an honor to produce an entire album for a veteran Utah hip hop group.

DO YOU TEND TO LIKE BEATS YOU BUILT YOURSELF AS OPPOSED TO SAMPLED BEATS?

I like making a beat from scratch on occasion, I don't always like them when their finished but when I do and then other people are feeling it it's good. But I prefer sample based beats. I tend to make beats from samples I have taken from soundtracks or scores of films I might see late at night, sometimes other places I hear music playing. I hunt the track down and usually know what I want to chop before I even have it.

WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVE PRODUCERS?

Madlib is one of my favourite producers, there is not a lot he has made that I don't like. I also really respect the RZA. I would say the RZA is one of my favourite producers of all time. He has created some of the most classic hip hop albums along with a philosophy that helped to change things in the industry for the artist. Other producers I like are flying lotus, Hudson Mohawke, DJ Premier, Hunchback Esquire, Dr Quandary, Mark Aubert, 4-LOM and Ras G

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN YOUR FINISHED WITH THE BEAT?

I never do. I just get to a point where I feel the sounds are complete-ish and stop. Every now and then I will go back and add stuff later.
HAVE YOU EVER MADE WHAT YOU FELT LIKE WAS A NIICE BEAT AND SOMEONE GOT ON IT AND DID IT NO JUSTICE?

No I never felt like that really. I know everyone I have ever worked with put 100% in. Even if I didn't feel what they did.

DO YOU PREFER TO KEEP YOUR BEATS AS INSTRUMENTALS OR DO YOU LIKE TO MAKE BEATS FOR OTHER ARTISTS?

I try to do both and keep them separate. But most of the time the beats I think will be too weird for the MC's end up being their favourite beats!?

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT NEWER EQUIPMENT VS THE OLDER EQUIPMENT?

I make my beats using a lot of software on a PC. I have used an MPC2000 in the past but found I preferred working with the software for speed. But I have seen a lot of old drum machines used live and that always looks and sounds a lot better then some dude starring at a laptop.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO PRODUCING/ ENGINEERING?

When I was young my Dad used to play me a lot of records, he was a soul DJ when he was younger. That got me into record collecting and then DJing, making beats was a natural progression from that.

WHO/WHAT INFLUENCES YOUR STYLE?

A lot of things but mainly my mood. It really depends on what mood I'm in, I have been told in the past by a listener that they can always guess what mood I was in when I made a certain beat. Apart from that I would say other music, I hear different things all the time and I will try to reverse engineer in my head what the producer must have done to create certain sounds or effects.

WHO ARE SOME OF THE ARTISTS YOU HAVE WORKED WITH SO FAR?

I have worked with a few different rappers from all parts of the world. I have created beats or remixes for the likes of NYOIL, Animal Nation and 101 from Biomecca in the past. At the moment I make a lot of beats and work with an MC called IZ-REAL from ATL, we have worked together on at least a dozen different projects now and we are currently working on new stuff at the moment which is sounding dope. Another rapper I have worked with for around 5 years now is Ethiks from TX. He has just released a new album called "A Day Without Computers" which features a couple of tracks of mine.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WANT PEOPLE THAT AREN'T FANS OF YOUR MUSIC TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?

The early bird gets the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese!?

WHO TAUGHT YOU ONE OF THE MOST VALUABLE LESSONS IN LIFE?

Ohhh that's too difficult. Some of my favourites are, Ichi the Killer, L'Haine, Sexy Beast, Goodfellas, Casino, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, dog day afternoon, platoon, the shinning, the vikings, the outlaw josey wales.....

WHAT ARE 3 THINGS YOU CANT LIVE WITHOUT?

I would have to say music obviously, then food and then green........tea.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE  COOL LAID BACK, INYOUR FACE, CONSCIOUS?

I would say I can be pretty cool and laid back most of the time and when it comes to certain things in life I am learning to be more and more like that. But I do have a short fuse and have been known to lose it on occasion.

WHEN DID YOU REALIZE YOU LOVED MUSIC MORE THAN THE AVERAGE PERSON?

When I was around 9-10 years old I realised that I listened to and knew of a lot more music then most of the kids my age and most of the ones in the year above me. When most kids were still listening to kids stuff I was listening to the prodigy and rave mix tapes. I always felt most people around me didn't appreciate music in the same way I did and could never understand why they didn't love music like me?

HOW DOES THE BEAT COME TO YOU? I KNOW SOME PRODUCERS SAMPLE BUT LIKE YOUR OWN ORIGINAL BEAT HOW DOES IT COME TO YOU?
It usually comes as an urgent need or energy to create. That is how most of my most popular beats were made, I usually find a loop or a sound which sparks an idea and it all starts from there.

It depends. I love the challenge of building my own beats, because it makes me feel as though I have earned the fruit of the labor. Some sampled beats are dope too.

WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVE PRODUCERS?

Premo, Dilla (R.I.P.), DJ Quick who is severely underrated, Treblefree, Pete Rock—to name a few.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN YOU’RE FINISHED WITH THE BEAT?

Truthfully…I don’t know. But being that I’m an emcee first, and I really began making beats for that purpose-I guess when I feel the song has said all it can say.  I never see a beat or a song as truly ending…just one of many pages in a larger story…

 HAVE YOU EVER MADE WHAT YOU FELT LIKE WAS A NIICE BEAT AND SOMEONE GOT ON IT AND DID IT NO JUSTICE?

Hell yes!  I take that quite serious.

DO YOU PREFER TO HAVE YOUR BEATS AS INSTRUMENTALS OR DO YOU LIKE TO MAKE BEATS FOR OTHER ARTISTS?

Instrumental albums are awesome, so I would say that’s what I would prefer. But-being an emcee-I make beats I could hear myself on.  In a few instances I have made artist-specific beats, but not too many times.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT NEWER EQUIPMENT VS THE OLDER EQUIPMENT?

I used to be highly bias to newer software like Fruity Loops-even called computer producers ‘mouse clickers.’ Lol. I’m an MPC head, so I’m used to constructing/composing everything-and its hard work—but I feel better having my hands immersed in the entire process. I have—as of late become a bit more accepting of the computer producers. Ultimately-whatever you use-if you have the ear for music—your creations will reflect that. If not, well…

HOW DID YOU GET INTO PRODUCING?

As I stated before-I am an emcee first, and when I began emceeing seriously, I was hard-pressed to find a producer who had a sound I felt comfortable with, so I took it upon myself-with encouragement from a couple friends-to make my own beats. The rest is history.

 WHO/WHAT INFLUENCES YOUR STYLE?

Jay Dee is definitely a huge influence on my sound-and several have highlighted similarities. I’m an ATCQ head-so the heavy jazz-influenced Native Tongue sound was love to my ears. RZA, among others who brought the darkness out of me. I have come to realize that my sound reflects the groove and the rage within me. I make music from emotion, and even when I became more immersed in beat making than emceeing, I feel I was still emceeing, but thru the music.

 WHO ARE SOME OF THE ARTISTS YOUR HAVE WORKED WITH SO FAR?

My first group the Genesis Experiment (DVSJ, G-Sicks, J Mecca-DJ, and moi),
The Iron Mic Coalition, Scott X, a slew of others and most recently some international artists like Jae Fresh (UK).

 WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WANT PEOPLE THAT AREN'T FANS OF YOU MUSIC TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?

I just want them to know I make what I feel, and it is not catered to the status quo. My reservoir is limitless..

WHO TAUGHT YOU ONE OF THE MOST VALUABLE LESSONS IN LIFE?

Life is the best teacher. Experiences have given me insight, but I am still growing…

IF YOU COULD CHANGE 1 THING ABOUT YOUR LIFE WOULD YOU? WHAT WOULD IT BE? AND WHY?

Hmmmm… I would be a little more emotionally open. I write my emotions vividly, but it is difficult sometimes in relationships to say the words, and no matter how many ways you express thru action, words will always retain their power.

WHY DO YOU LOVE MUSIC?

Music is the language that can adequately convey the conversations of my soul. I am incomplete without it.

As a child when I would sing Motown songs to my classmates.

That’s a question difficult to answer. To me—it’s a matter of ‘the Blue Note.’ I can’t exactly tell you how, but when it comes—it’s a monsoon.

HOW DO YOU FEEL THAT YOUR ENVIRONMENT HAS INFLUENCED YOUR STYLE AND YOUR RHYMES?

Unless my imagination is a direct counter-narrative to my environment—and I’m not saying it is or isn’t—I would simply say that my internal Universe has more of a profound influence on my expression.

DO YOU DO PERFORMANCES? IF SO WHERE CAN PEOPLE CATCH YOU?

I have begun performing more often, Saturday-November 5th is the release of my decade-plus long overdue solo project Revenge of the Nice Guy.

HOW MANY MIXTAPES/ALBUMS HAVE YOU MADE

If I count my projects from The Genesis Experiment to now—which have been mostly instrumental albums-Revenge of the Nice Guy will be my 9th project.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU?

Music, touring hopefully, and a kiss somewhere in that mix. Lol.

HOW DO YOU THINK YOUR STYLE HAS CHANGED OVER THE YEARS?

I really don’t know. I feel I have evolved in many ways personally, and that evolution is thus reflected thru my art.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST EMOTIONAL SONG FOR YOU TO WRITE?

Letter 2 Isis. It took me over 6months to write that song. It was about an old relationship.

WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE WHEN SOMEONE TELLS YOU THEY LOVE YOUR SONG/S?

Sometimes, it’s difficult to process, because I am never satisfied with what I do, but all-in-all—I’m elated when people are moved when hearing/experiencing my music. Perhaps they see what I cannot. Perhaps it is not for me to see, but rather conduit the music.

YOU'VE BEEN AROUND FOR A MINUTE NOW WOULD YOU SAY OPPORTUNITIES ARE EASIER FOR ARTISTS TO COME BY NOWADAYS OR IN THE PAST?

Opportunities have to some extent become easier, but the work has become uniquely greater. On the one hand, artists have access to home studios. Conversely, so does everyone else—and everyone else feels their music is great-so they clog up the various social networks etc. and you have to grind that much more to set yourself apart. But ultimately—the music will speak for itself…hopefully.  We do, however—live in an age of sonic apathy and mass mediocrity, so what many consider ‘good music’ is…not.

IV THE POLYMATH







DO YOU TEND TO LIKE BEATS YOU BUILD YOURSELF AS OPPOSED TO SAMPLED BEATS?

Yea I think lately I’m more into building my own beats from scratch. I still sample, but never a loop or a large piece of music. I think sampling can be great because it gives you textures that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to work with, but with the recent influx of new producers, it’s more important than ever to really do everything you can to separate yourself from others. By using samples, you run the risk of using the same sounds as someone else, whereas with building your own, while it’s still possible, it isn’t as likely.
WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVE PRODUCERS?
Right now I’m listening to a lot of Hazel, Freddie Joachim, Damu the Fudgemunk, Wellaware, Man Mantis, J Dilla, & Clutchy Hopkins.

HAVE YOU EVER MADE WHAT YOU FELT LIKE WAS A NIICE BEAT AND SOMEONE GOT ON IT AND DID IT NO JUSTICE?

Ah yea about once a month I get an email from someone who rapped over one of my beats online. 10 times out of 10 they are pretty bad. There’s only been one so far that was dope – she’s a singer & we’re going to work on some stuff together in the future.
If it’s an emcee that I’m legitimately working with on something I don’t have a problem telling them I don’t like what they did & why. I used to have a hard time with that, but honesty is important if you want to make good music.

DO YOU PREFER TO KEEP YOUR BEATS AS INSTRUMENTALS OR DO YOU LIKE TO MAKE BEATS FOR OTHER ARTISTS?

Well I’m actually more into instrumentals than vocal tracks. I like to produce instrumental albums & that’s mostly what I listen to as well. Lately I’ve branched out more tho & started working with some really great artists. I’m going to produce about a half-dozen vocal projects next year.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT NEWER EQUIPMENT VS THE OLDER EQUIPMENT?

I’m a gear head & I love MPCs, keyboards, guitars, drums, & turntables. I always say that if you can watch porn on it then it’s not an instrument & I think there is something to be said for the limitations of certain machines. It forces you to be more creative & think outside the box. Also, having too many options at your fingertips can cause your beats to become stale & lifeless. Good music isn’t based on science; it’s based on feeling.

You can cover up a lack of skill with some of the newer software programs if you know how to use them, but when you’re working with just the basics, you’ve got to manually do the work every step of the way & while listeners can’t hear the difference, they can feel it. It’s like a home cooked meal simmering on the stove all day vs. fast food. For me it’s not about knowing how to use a program, but knowing how to make good music.

WHO/WHAT INFLUENCES YOUR STYLE?

I know it sounds cliché, but my music is inspired by everyday occurrences. A good day will bring an energetic groove while a bad one will draw out a melancholy beat. I’m also influenced by other artists - both new & old. I still revisit the classics on a regular basis & as a crate digger; it’s my job to unearth dope records that haven’t been heard before, so there’s that too.
A lot of the new producers are doing really great stuff as well so it’s hard not to draw inspiration from them & their work. Just like digging in the crates to find dope records, I “dig” thru the internet to find the best unknown producers so I can vibe to their music & understand what my peers are doing. I think the accessibility that the internet provides allows us to influence each other while still maintaining & evolving our own sound. It’s an exciting time for music.

WHO ARE SOME OF THE ARTISTS YOUR HAVE WORKED WITH SO FAR?

Jondis, junclassic, Praverb the Wyse, Idris Goodwin, Olu Bliss, & Atari Blitzkrieg are some of the people I’ve worked with thus far. I plan on doing more music with all of them & also working with new artists in the future. I’m really just getting started.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WANT PEOPLE THAT AREN'T YET FANS OF YOUR MUSIC TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?

I don’t smoke weed. People are always surprised to know that for some reason. I think it’s because a lot of my beats are extra smooth so they assume I like to blaze or something, but yeah, just for the record I don’t smoke haha.
WHO TAUGHT YOU ONE OF THE MOST VALUABLE LESSONS IN LIFE?
My pops taught me that I could do anything if I put my mind to it. It’s very true & I’m glad he taught me that at an early age. If he didn’t show me the importance of setting goals & making sacrifices then I wouldn’t have ever started Polymath Records.
My mother also taught me about the power of positive thinking. Your thoughts control everything & it’s important to understand that. With a negative outlook, you will never be happy, but with a positive one, you can accomplish almost anything.

IF YOU COULD PICK 3 ARTISTS PAST OR PRESENT TO WORK WITH WHO WOULD YOU PICK?

I’d love to produce an album with Mos Def, Talib Kweli, & Erykah Badu. That would be my choice.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE COOL LAID BACK OR INYOUR FACE?

Musically I’m laid back so far that you might fall out of your chair. Smooth grooves with funky bass lines & hard drums that cut thru the mix. As a person, I’m laid back too, but once you get to know me I can be pretty intense. If you’re talking about sports or the weather then I just don’t care, but if we get on the subject of music, psychology, books, or solving the world’s problems, I will rap with you all day.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO TO RELAX?

Haha well I meditate a lot & do yoga. I like to cook – vegan food that’s so good you wouldn’t even miss the stuff you normally eat. I read mad books too & I like to write. I’m actually working on an outline for a book at the moment. I also get down on Xbox Live, but I only play NBA 2K. If anyone reading this wants to play, hit me up @ PolymathRecords.

Well I’ve been playing piano since I was 4 years old so it really just comes naturally. The beat literally comes to me without thinking about it & then I just build from there. My best work comes when I’m just jamming on the keys over drums. Once I find a groove that I really like, I’ll record it & then start adding other layers to it. I try to think of myself as a one-man band as opposed to a hip hop producer. I’ve also got countless songs I’ve started over the years on piano that kinda come back into the mix when I’m making a beat. Some of my beats are variations of piano jams I did 10 years ago.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE 1 THING ABOUT YOUR LIFE WOULD YOU? WHAT WOULD IT BE? AND WHY?

I think everything is where it’s supposed to be. Of course there are things that I struggle with, but it’s for a reason & those things will change once I learn whatever lessons I’m supposed to learn from them.

Eyesofphases or known to many as EOP is a producer, blogger, crate digger, and avid video gamer originally from eastern NC, now residing in Greensboro NC. EOP is a sample based producer that fell in love with music at a very young age. Now as a adult after many years of perfecting his craft, EOP's production has been featured on several mixtapes, beat tape compilations, his music has been featured on various websites and skateboarding events. This winter EOP's third instrumental project Pastel Moods is scheduled to be released after the critically acclaimed projects World of Dreams and Scent of a Angel. Stay tuned for much more.

I usually build around my samples, creating multiple layers to manipulate my drums and bass line

My favorite producers range from Quincy Jones, Butch Vig, Primo, Pete Rock, Rashid Hadee, Ken-E, The Stuyvesant, Digs, Kidnice, Alchemist, Skibeatz and many more.


HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN YOUR FINISHED WITH THE BEAT?

I never really finish beats, the way I sample I'm constantly hearing new sounds to add to beats.

DO YOU PREFER TO KEEP YOUR BEATS AS INSTRUMENTALS OR DO YOU LIKE TO MAKE BEATS FOR OTHER ARTISTS?

I usually make my beats as instrumentals with no set structure, if there is a artist I vibe with that wants to get on a instrumental then I will change it to accommodate that artist.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT NEWER EQUIPMENT VS THE OLDER EQUIPMENT?

I really have no opinion on newer equipment. I use the akai mpc 2000xl, it works best for me. I believe in less is best, the less equipment I have it forces me to be more creative.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO PRODUCING/ ENGINEERING?

I got into producing by falling in love with hip hop. I remember as a kid listening to Dela, ATCQ, CNN, Mobb Deep, BCC and Royal Flush and thinking this is what I want to do.

WHO/WHAT INFLUENCES YOUR STYLE?

Life influences my music, my music reflects my mood. People that really know me, can tell they type of day I've had when they hear my tracks. My cat influences my style, just watching her run on the wall and act like some type of a demon ninja, it creates theme music in my head

IF YOU COULD CHANGE 1 THING ABOUT YOUR LIFE WOULD YOU? WHAT WOULD IT BE? AND WHY?

I wouldn't change anything about my life, everything I've been through made me who I am.

WHY DO YOU LOVE MUSIC?

I love that music can touch the soul. Good music is a time stamp on the heart and mind. Any influential record that I love regardless of the age at the time when I received the record. I remember everything that I've done that day.
